Stop Food Waste: New Android App Tracks Expiration Dates

How many half-empty jars are rotting in your fridge right now? How many medications expired in your medicine cabinet without you noticing? Food waste and expired items are a silent drain on household budgets. I built Expiration Alarm to solve this problem once and for all.

I started this project because I kept throwing away spoiled food and forgetting when cosmetics went bad after opening. The frustration was real—especially in a busy household where nobody remembers what’s actually in the back of the fridge. I wanted something simple: point your phone at an expiration date, get a reminder before it expires, and never waste money on forgotten groceries again.

What It Does

  • Camera OCR auto-detection — Point your phone at any printed expiration or use-by date, and the app reads it automatically. You can also upload photos from your library.
  • One-screen manual entry — Add items by name, category, expiration date, purchase date, memo, and icon. Reminders start the moment you save.
  • Smart categorization — Choose from twelve built-in categories: milk, eggs, bread, meat, vegetables, fruit, drinks, canned goods, medicine, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and other.
  • Visual countdown — Every item shows days remaining as D-7, D-DAY, or D+3. Items close to expiring are color-highlighted so nothing sneaks past you.
  • Flexible reminders — Toggle the default 7-day, 1-day, and same-day alerts on or off. You can also set a custom reminder time for individual items.
  • Complete privacy — No sign-up, no login, no cloud sync. All your data stays on your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app.

The app is available in both Korean and English, with light and dark mode support. Version 1.0.2 brings notification fixes, per-item reminder timing, and stability improvements across Android versions.
